G'day all,

I still can't get powertop 2.0-beta to work properly, but the old 1.12 version
does a good job of
documenting those apps that cause most of the wakeups.

I keep firefox open with ~100 tabs most of the time, plus thunderbird and
Zimbra desktop. Combined,
this party is good for about 300 wakeups/s. I like to keep them open as I often
refer to stuff while
on a flight even if I can't get to the world, but they sit there chewing up
battery like nobodys
business.

I use Gnome and I have 8 virtual desktops that I flick between, and I thought
it might be an idea to
send a -SIGSTOP to any apps on all but the current desktop. With the leverage
of some already well
written code (someone elses), I managed to knock up a little python script that
automatically STOP's
and CONT's anything running locally on the desktops as you switch between them.

Significantly, over a 6 hour flight this averaged a watt of saving over what I
saw on the way there.

I can't be the first person to have done this, so I'll put the feelers out to
see if anyone else has
seen something similar?

Regards,
Brad
