Hi, I'm new on this list, but also knowledgeable on this subject. You are
incorrect in a number of areas:
1. Contrary to what you have said, Canadians do not pay provincial or
federal taxes on used purchases bought from private citizens in Canada
(other than automobiles). However, when you purchase something from a
private citizen (as opposed to a business) in the U.S. and the item comes
through Canada Post or UPS, you almost always have pay GST and PST (15%) on
used items bought from private citizens in the U.S. This, to me, is a
blatant ripoff and a "back door" around the free trade agreement and having
sold many items to people in the U.S., I have yet to here of one of them
getting charged any state or provincial tax as a result of something used
they bought from a private person in Canada. For some reason, Fedex never
seems to charge the PST or GST (at least to me), but you need to have an
account to ship international ground (the cheapest method). And just to make
it clear, it's the Canadian government doing the ripping off.
2. Computers are duty free *if* they are manufactured in the US. If they
were manufactured elsewhere, they can charge duty on them.
And on a list note - I have just purchased a 5300 (from someone in the U.S.
and yes, I got zapped for brokerage and tax) and don't have the manual yet.
There seems to be an infrared port on the 5300. Can I synch with my Newton
over this?
Tom
