I'm okee with doing it - in time :). At the moment I'm just nowhere near
the tools to do so. This one does have an internal modem, a 19.2k
apparently... Are there faster ones for the 540's? I never thout of
that!

The only tool required is a T8 (Torx) driver, available at any Sears store
for about $2 (my local Sears store is selling these drivers for $0.97 these
days) [ * ] .
The GV TelePort 500 modem requires software in order to operate.
The latest base version is 2.5. This is contained on two 1.44 MB floppies.
The latest update version is 2.5.5. This is contained on one 1.44 MB floppy.
Based upon my experience, both the base and update are required, and must be
installed in sequence, with a reboot between each install.
The base version is a licensed product, and was at one time available for
sale by GV before the GV -> Boca -> Zoom asset sale. I believe the price was
$25 per copy.
But, this base version is no longer available, and AFAIK it has never been
posted on any of the usual "free software" sites.
Rumor has it that the code itself was lost in the asset handoff from GV to a
successor.
The update version is presently on GV's web site, and is free.
The GV TelePort 500 modem will in fact connect at 19.2 ... to those few
services which support GV's particular implementation of 19.2.
In my experience, most services won't connect at anything faster than 14.4.
Special note on installing 2.5 and 2.5.5 software ...
This software requires "registration" in order to function, and this
registration is done electronically through a telephone call to GV's
registration server.
However, the GV's registration server has been permanently disconnected, so
registration is actually impossible.
By using the appropriate menus, you can get the software to: 1) retry the
registration each time you reboot your machine, 2) retry the registration in
seven days, or 3) never retry the registration.
You definitely want to select the "never" option.
This "never" option was not available in the earlier versions of the GV
software, and that meant that at every reboot a registration dialog box would
appear.
[ * ] Besides the T8 driver, the only other driver required is a T6, and that
is required only to remove or replace the floppy drive's mounting bracket.
