Turns out the problem was with my PRAM. TechTool Pro took care of it and now
the 104MB on the 128MB ATA Flash Card is used as Virtual Memory once again.
This gets around the RAM limitations for the 1400; with prices coming down
for Flash Cards, it is an option to keep your PB going for a long time (even
running Mac OS X with a decent processor upgrade).

For those curious:
1) Format the ATA Flash Card as a Mac OS Drive using Drive Setup.
2) Open the Memory control panel and turn OFF VM.
3) Restart your computer (so the VM is off to take affect). If the Flash
Card is in the PCMCIA slot, it will be ejected on restart.
4) Open the Memory control panel and turn the VM back on. Select the ATA
Flash Card as the drive to use.
5) Restart

You should not have the "spit-out" problem and when checking the "About this
computer" the VM will be shown on the Flash Card drive.

The 128MB card is maxed out at 104MB due to hidden directory files et al.
Don't be alarmed and think your card has somehow been corrupted and has bad
blocks. You can see this with a utility like TechTool. Please be aware that
some people in online articles (see pbsource and lowendmac) warn that Flash
Cards were not designed to be written to so often (e.g. they're for
camera's) and could cause problems... I've been doing this for nearly a year
and only had this PRAM problem recently. It's a lot faster than using your
hard drive for VM and is using real, physical memory. Now, living with the
30Mhz bus...

later,
J.
