The User's Guide says that to connect a printer or a modem, the computer
must be in sleep or shut down, but to connect a SCSI device, all devices
in the chain, including the computer, must be turned off. Sometimes
manuals are helpful!

The manual doesn't say what to do with ADB devices, but says to refer to
the device manual. I haven't had any problems with unplugging/plugging
mice when the computer was in sleep.
