After having spent some time rejuvenating a PowerBook 100, my first thought
when I read this was that you have a combination of a near-dead battery and
a corroded or otherwise corrupted power-in contact. This would explain the
"strobe" effect - I experienced this with the PB 100, and maybe some more
erratic behaviour. Getting a less-dead (I beg your pardon if this is not
very correct in medical terms) battery in and cleaning the power-in
contacts with "Kontakt 60" - something we have here in Germany, WD 40 is
the closest thing to it beknownst to me - worked well for me. Should the
problem really have any relation with the top half swapping, you're in
serious trouble, and I'd recommend the incense, holy water and a candle in
a church of your choice, plus arresting the usual suspects (zapping the
PRAM and rebuilding the desktop, but be reassured, this won't help.)
Good luck, OM
