I just installed what came with 8.1, works fine all of the time. I'm not sure
how you 'partially install' remote access. There are a couple of Open
Transport libraries, the TCP/IP and PPP control panel and that's it iirc.
What I'd do is do a custom install of Open Transport and PPP from the 8.1 CD.
In OS versions prior to 8.5 Apple Remote Access was a separate control panel
and didn't have anything to do with PPP.
The PB's at work right now so I can't give you version numbers.
My bet is that the ISP gave you the wrong DNS numbers, though.
