I have to agree with Both of the people who suggested OSs for the PowerBook 540c. If you do NOT have a PowerPC upgrade card than you can go no higher than System 8.1. If you DO have a PowerPC upgrade card there is an easy procedure to make all of the OSs up to and including 9.1 run on that computer. I also heartily endorse System 7.6.1 on that unit, PowerPC or not. 7.6.1 is slick and fast and tight and does just about everything you really need even compared to the most modern systems. If you really want every last bell and whistle the non-PPC is capable of than 8.1 (NOT 8.0) is what you want. Either way, 36 Meg. of ram is fine. If you need a few utilities check out http://63.104.169.60 and look for the PowerBook 500 series folder. Please respect any copyrights. If you have questions feel free to ask. I am currently running OS 9.1 on a 183 MHz (NewerTech) PowerPC upgraded 520c with an upgraded screen and 32 Meg. of RAM and 810 Meg. HD.
