It sounds more like you may need to try a little software first. Do two
things first, before you go replacing hardware, reset the Power Manager and
maybe use Battery Reconditioner. You may have to use the reconditioner
several times to get it to work, and this is normal from what I hear. The Pwr
Mgr gets corrupted over time. And Recond. may take an hour or more for each
run.

Battery Reconditioner should be on your 5300 in the Appiclations> Apple
Extras> Portables. You did not say which OS you were using, in OS 8.6 the
version is 1.5 from OS 8.5. IIRC it is a part of the OS since Sys 7, maybe
before.

IIRC to reset the Power Manager on the 5300, you reset it by shutting down
and removing both the battery and AC adapter, then press and hold the reset
button on the back for 5- 30 seconds. Then re-boot. This will also reset the
PRAM, so if like me you like to maintain the original PRAM date and running
hours, save this info first with TechTools. You may also have to reset a few
setting afterwards, like the Date & Time.

You can do other searches in the Apple Knowledge Base now that you kknow a
few more terms to research.
