I just went to check my 540c (closed and 'asleep' since last night, only
to find it hadn't gone to sleep.

It crashed, and when it restarted it made some horrible disk-grinding
noises and I got the dread 'X disk' icon...

I fear my drive has gone to the great dead disk dump in the sky...:-(

I'm going to let it cool, maybe take it out of the case and whack it
gently, but I know that sound, it's a HDD death rattle...if I can get it
alive, I'm dumping as much as I can off to another mac while it lives...

Does anyone know where I might find a larger scsi notebook drive (I know
they're rarer than hens teeth!) This was one of the coveted 512 mb
ones...I'd really like one of those...

The IDE conversions at MCE are not an option, they're cost much more
than the computer is worth...
