No dumb questions here! I am using a Compact Flash memory card with a pc-card adapter.
Both of these can be found at CompUSA, etc. in the digital camera area. Better prices can be found on the internet, if you are willing to wait. In fact, dealmac.com has a notice today for a compact flash 128 mb card for less than $50. If I had the money, I personally would grab it. The adapter can be found for less than $10, from time to time, but usually around $25 anywhere. Please don't make my silly mistake. I have my PB1400 maxed out to 64 meg of RAM. So, I thought that another 64mb card would be enough for added Virtual Memory. I FORGOT that VM has to fit all on the same space. So, when I went to set up the Memory on the card it gave me the "disk is not large enough for Virtual Memory" alert. OOPS! Get at least a 128 meg card. As far as setting the card up to be used as memory, it is fairly easy. The 1400 is already set up to recognize compact flash cards. When you insert the adapter, it mounts as a PC-formatted disk (with a PC-card logo, on my screen). I reformatted it as a Mac disk using the "Erase Disk..." menu. I was told that this was the right thing to do, and it seemed to work. Then, just go into the Virtual Memory control panel and select the card and the amount of memory to be used. Your computer doesn't access the hard drive near as often, and for me, the memory seems more stable and runs faster, since there are no moving parts inside the card. I also put my documents and web cache on the card. Two more things that typically cause the hard drive to spin up most often. One caution: I have heard that compact flash cards are rated for a certain number of writes and then MAY start losing data, just like a floppy disk. Theoretically, all those frequent calls to memory may wear out the card and cause failures. So I am told. But, I haven't heard this happen to anyone yet.
