Well, I manged to squeak by on general good luck, I think...probably used up my good Karma for a while too :-/
My 540c that wouldn't boot, making nasty drive kachunk! noises responded to a healthy swat on the bottom of the case under the HDD. Booted up after that and has run fine since, about 24 hours now... I immediately started a copy of the HDD off to another mac, so I have a backup (I know, I know..I tell everyone to do that! Do as I say, not as I do...;-) and that went fine. <WHEW> So far so good.
