I installed it on both 520c and 5300 powerbooks using English OS 8.1 . I used version 1.2, circa 1995 which i got from a friend who bouht it in the US. It seems to work ok with OS 7.5.3 & OS 8.1 I don't really use it much but it allows Japanese kanji to be recognized in my email, without it it reads as gibberish. It contains a version of simple text which lets you write in Japanese. This might be enough for your 5 year old son to fool around with. You could also find a Japanese OS, partition your hard drive and install both an English and Japanese OS or add an external SCSI with only the Japanese OS on it. However it's a pain in the brain to figure out stuff on a Japanese OS if you are not bi-lingual. You'd probably also need Japanese versions of hard disk maintence software to maintain the Japanese OS. It is possible to use the Japanese OS with English software though. I have used English Word and AOL on a Powerbook Duo with JOS 7.5.3. Another thought, doesn't English OS 8.6 or 9 come with the language kit in the OS? But of course they need a lot more ram.
