I'm a little out of my depth with this new 5300c powerbook. It just dawned on
me that my old SCSI CD ROM won't even plug into the book. The minimum OS is
7.5.3 and the lowest I have on floppy is 7.5. Is file sharing (which I do
frequently) possible even before the empty powerbook HD is updated and a
system installed on it? Is it possible to have my 7.6.1 CD loaded on one of
my 040's and then to install that OS to the powerbook via file sharing?
That's the highest OS I have on CD.

Hello,

Using File Sharing to put a system folder on the 5300 should work, but there
is an important detail to check whenever you do this. The installer will
think you are installing the system onto the startup computer unless you use
"I wish I was". "I wish I was" is a shareware file that allows you to change
the Gestalt identification. A System Folder from an 040 will not work on the
5300. Some of the earlier Operating Systems allowed you to put a system for
"any" Mac, I once learned the hard way that later OS's can be very
particular. (Using a Zip Drive, I copied a system folder from a Performa
onto an Quadra--no good.)

If you have enough room on the 5300 hard drive, it might be easier to copy
the installer onto your Powerbook and then run the installer. I would boot
up with a Disk Tools floppy and check the hard drive, if it shows up on the
desktop, you are in luck. If the Hard Drive doesn''t appear, then it needs
to be formatted, and maybe the Apple Disk Setup program will fix it. (You
might need a 3rd party utility.) If you copy the the Disk Tool system folder
onto the hard drive, it will startup, but complain every time. The 7.6 OS CD
has a disk tool image, use DiskCopy to make the PPC Disk Tools floppy. (You
might need to add the File Sharing software to your mini-system folder with
another floppy.) Create a System Folder on the 040 using "I wish I was" set
to a 5300 and transfer that, or transfer the installer to the Powerbook and
then run it to create the system on the 5300.

There are adaptors that will have the Powerbook SCSI on one side and the
larger SCSI on the other side, or you might get a cable that plugs into the
Powerbook from your external CD drive.

Good Luck!
