For cellular capability with your laptop, you need to have a cell
phone that acts as a modem, the modem scripts for that phone, and the
proper cables to hook your cell phone to your laptop.
It took me a while to get all these together for my 3400, but it can
be done. My cell phone (an older Kyocera Qualcomm) had a cell phone
connectivity kit available at the Verizon store. The included software was
for PC's, so I emailed Kyocera for the necessary Mac software - the modem
script. I downloaded that onto my laptop and then all I needed was an
adaptor and and a cable to make the proper connection from the modem port
to the phone connectivity cable - ordered through catalog vendor.
I get a 14.4 connection with this set-up. Yes, it's slow, but it's
all I need to to do email and (slow) web research in my van while
traveling. No, I'm not the driver! I've even used my laptop in this
manner on my friend's houseboat, while cruising a lake. I have lots of
weekend minutes on the cell plan and I've sure enjoyed having this
capability.
