I found the Farallon Airdock worked well to provide infrared to the desktop machine. You should be able to use it with system 8.1 (Farallon helped me set that up, but now they're some other firm) I'd have to look up the instructions. Also, the instructions say you could be several feet away to transfer files, but I found I had to have the device close to the IR port on the powerbook 5300. >From memory the software involves an extension to connect- again I'd have to check. What price do they want on ebay?
Have you also thought about connecting by ethernet crossover cable? It's messier than the Airdock, but your desktop may already have an ethernet card, and you can buy an ethernet card that fits in the PCMCIA slot of the 5300.
