I've got a non-functioning cell in one of my 5xx batteries, and have
seen a couple of posts that mentioned clearing shorted cells. Can anyone
give more specifics on how this is done? Do you have to cut open the
battery to do it?
TIA,
Don Silver

I also cleared a shorted cell by applying short bursts of high ma. to
that cell.

That was me. Yes, you have to open the case which isn't too difficult if
you are patient. There is a site that you can find by searching for
"Apple PowerBook 520 & 540 Modifications & Fixes" This will talk you
through it. I didn't use a capacitor or car battery, but a 500 ma, 12v
motorcycle battery charger. This worked for about a day of getting 40
min. from the pack, then the cell shorted again. Since I had another
really dead pack with several bad cells oozing white fluff, I replaced
the shorted cell with one of the good ones from the dead spare. This may
be your best bet. New individual cells go for about $6. That pack is now
giving me 1 hr. & 20 min., thanks to the tips on battery utilities I got
from list members. It seems like there is a better class of people on
this LEM list, or did I subscribe in-between flame wars?

Good luck,
