I've been using my new eBay 540c for several days and have uncovered a problem with charging the batteries. I also won a bid on a 520c "as is, for parts, can't test it" PowerBook that I wanted for case parts. It works perfectly, of course but didn't come with a power adapter.
I've been transferring files between the two 5xxs, using one with the two "good" batteries and powering the other with the adapter. I shut the one with the batteries down and charge them on the other one then replace them in the first one and continue. The adapter runs continuously for hours this way and then suddenly the batteries won't charge when I plug them into whichever machine is currently using the adapter. It powers the PowerBook fine, it just won't charge the batteries. If I let it cool for several hours or put it in the freezer for several minutes (my wife loves it), we are back up and running normally. Is this a known problem with these power adapters? Do the interior solder joints fail like they do on Mac Plus analog boards with heat and age? Is there a trick to opening the adapter and if I do, is there anything I can solder or otherwise repair?
