Since I don't have a SCSI external CD-ROM drive, I did connect my 540c to my G4 Cube using Ethernet to load software. It worked well. I used my cable modem router as the link between the two computers, but you can connect the Macs directly using Ethernet as well.
Make the Mac that you'll be using as a CD-ROM into a simple server through the File Sharing control panel, then from the 540c find your "server" in the Chooser and log in to access the files you need to transfer. Another option is to make a bootable Zip disk (if you have a SCSI Zip drive), and use it to reformat the drive and install software. E-mail me off-list if you need more help. Good luck.
