There are two shareware programs that might interest you. Graphic Converter
will open an entire folder. You can change the names and I think also add
info/comments, and of course group convert to whatever format you wish.
iView Media Pro is a bit easier for cataloguing and also can produce a
thumbnail "gallery" that you can save. This is basically all it does,
however. I know GC is available for X, I don't know about iView. Check
versiontracker.

There are also shareware programs that will automatically produce an HTML
thumbnail with links, if that's what you're after.
