Another data point ...

I ran 7.6.1 on my 5300cs (40 MB RAM) and recently upgraded to 8.1.  8.1 seemed more 
stable and a little faster.

Then I added Speed Doubler 8(.1.2), which, IMO, made more of a difference than going 
from 7.6.1 to 8.1.  The nice thing about MacOS 8.x is that you have some additional 
features, and you can use some of the later software.  8.1 does use more RAM, though.
