I put 8.1 on 3 powerbooks and desktop pictures won't load at all- the "new" picture loads on desktop for maybe 1 second then vanishes. I couldn't find a cause, even tried reducing the # of colors in the bundled sample desktop pics to no avail.
The only incompatibility I've read- the "quicktime jpeg update" extension of QT 5.x basically just corrupts viewing of jpgs in OS 8.6 and below, which also affects desktop pictures, you should delete it.
