The internal slot is a custom slot, and can only take cards 
specifically designed for it. These can usually be found on E-bay.

However, the 1400 also has two 16-bit PC Card slots, which can take 
any 16-bit 10Mbps Ethernet card *IF* a driver is provided. Some of 
the drivers for the cards from Dayna, Farallon, etc., also work with 
generic cards.

On Dr.Bott's website I've seen 16-bit 100/10Mbps Ethernet PC cards for the Mac.
