I have successfully downgraded the system software on my 540C to 7.53. Much faster, uses less memory and with the appearance extension I salvaged from the previous 8.1 folder, it looks as good as 8 did. Bit by bit, I am getting it geared back up. Open transport, tcp/ip, and ppp seem to be in order. The problem is the internal modem. I don't have the original software, but I put the power port tool extension in the extensions folder and I have the control panel for it in the control panels folder. It's control panel opens just fine and then mayhem begins. It says modem starting up and then abruptly says it was shut down because it either doesn't have enough memory or is unable to run on this computer. It worked fine before, and it has plenty of memory. Any idea what's up with this thing? I have tried talking nice to it, followed by several hours of cursing it's very existence. I don't think the system is too minimal either since this thing shipped with 7.1.1. Perhaps somebody has the original software disk they could email? Shrug. Help!
