I've seen this happen when running a PowerPoint slide show with a movie in it. Everything's working fine and the you get to the movie and all you see is a black rectangle where the movie is playing. Looks fine on the laptop's screen though. The movie just doesn't project even though the PowerPoint background does project. The problem has to do with the sync signal of the video display (your TV in this case) being different than that of your laptop's display. I've seen this happen when using CRT projectors, never with LCD projectors. Try and set the laptop's display to a lower screen resolution and lower refresh rate and see if that helps. You're looking to find one that the project supports, or in this case, your TV which unlike a projector, probably only has one rate.
