You will need to use PowerPrint's serial/parallel version. As most USB printers will not respond to the serial/parallel combination without it. Most printer drivers need the USB port. and will refuse to print from a serial port. You can usually find PowerPrint on eBay. just make sure its the serial version not the USB one. My parents use it on their 6300 with an HP printer.
Also you might be able to share the printer using another Mac as the printer server. EpsonShare, a shareware app comes to mind. If your 1400 has been G3 upgraded and both machines run OS-9 then you can use the built in printer sharing feature.
