Sorry, I'm obviously _very_ late replying to this, but I thought maybe I could help. I'm happily using the VST drive with OS 8.5.1. I never installed the Iomega software that came with the drive; I saw no reason to bother with it. I stuck with the same old driver I was using for my Zip external. It worked alright, except for some minor issues (I'm a very heavy user), but I eventually downgraded the driver to a much older version (ca. 1998?), which has been more reliable and presented no problems whatsoever. The driver is only 48 K; I can send it if you want. The bottom line is OS 8.6 is not a requirement, and I would expect OS 8.1 to work the same. - Josh
