Yes, there is a known weakness of the 3400's audio out jack. I had one
go bad while I was listening to it one day.
Here is some info I have found about bypassing it....

Sorry, but you got a defective motherboard now. I had the same problem (
and quite a couple of other people). I fixed it myself by rewiring a
Line-Out signal, that is available on the PCI-slot inside (used for the
optional Ethernet/Modem card) to the out-jack. This way you have at
least a line-level out (NO headphones!)

how to do it:
get the Developer Tech Note for the 3400 from a Hotline server listed
below

Youll find the pinouts of the PCI-slot on Page 38:
pin 95 - MB_COM_OUT
Pin 97 - MB_R_OUT
Pin 99 - MB_L_OUT

First you need a Torx 8 driver.
Also use an antistatic wristband (connect it to ground on the
motherboard).
You dont have to remove the motherboard to access these pins. But you
have to disassemble the HD, charging circuitry, Modem/Ethernet-card and
the CPU heatsink.
The PCI-slot is SMD type and has VERY narrow spaced pins. Youll need an
SMD soldering needle, solid soldering skills (its all minature SMD
stuff) a magnifying glass is recommended.
I solderered one wire to pin 99 and traced pin 97 to a spot where
soldering was a little bit easier. Pin 95 is not needed as ground is
availiable at the output-jack. You can wire pin 97 and 99 to the
output-jack by unsoldering its left and right signal pins and isolating
them to the motherboard with some adhesive tape.

After having removed the battery charging circuitry the PB will NOT
restart from the internal battery. After reassembling you need to
restart with the power-supply connected, by pressing the reset button on
the backside of the PB for about one minute.

The signal you have now on your reawakened audio-out is line-level, and
cant be controlled via volume-control, but thats the only backdraw
there is. I use my PB with this mod for one year now without any
problem.

Warnings:
DO NOT CONNECT A HEADPHONE TO THIS OUTPUT, THIS MIGHT KILL YOUR NEW
AUDIO OUT FOR ALL TIMES !!!
Leave this mod to a skilled repairman, if youre not familiar with
soldering SMD circuitry.
