The 1400 isn't even an 'Old World' system, it's a Nubus system.

Give that it's an upgraded 1400, not a 3400 those refs aren't much use.

For a 1400 you'll need to install mkLinux:

http://www.mklinux.org/

more info see: http://lppcfom.sourceforge.net/fom-serve/cache/350.html
there's a fair bit of information on getting it to run on a 1400...

But note:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Additional PowerBook Support:

Under MkLinux, the PowerBook 1400, 2300, and 5300 are partially
supported. External SCSI support is not working yet, nor is support for
the internal modem or card-based ethernet (internal). PCMCIA cards are
not supported on any PowerBook. Thus, the systems are a bit isolated,
but they're useful for development, etc.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Not having ethernet on a Unix system is somewhat like riding a bicycle
with square wheels: not very enjoyable, far too much work, and never
more than an odd curiosity...

But that's just my opinion...
