apparently the passive matrix screens on these earlier G3 Powerbooks are
very prone to fading and washing out... a very cheap 233 much like you
describe came up for sale a few weeks ago, and that was reason. I quick call
to my local AppleCentre confirmed that they'd fixed 3 in the last week or
so, and, oh yeah, a new 12.1" PSTN screen would be AUD$800... which was $200
more than the 'Book itself!!! That said, complete active matrix 14.1"
screens can be found on eBay for under US$150, which probably wouldn't be
such a bad upgrade to consider, bad screen or not.
