=== just as a side question from Jim's comments about old the condition of old Powerbook batteries these days and their hellish replacement cost, I've read in a few places that, quite cheaply, Powerbook batteries can have new battery cells wired into their specific casings for a fraction of the cost of a replacement battery unit. basically it is supposed to involve splitting open the case and soldering in the cells with whatever equivalents you can find at your local Tandy/RadioShack. Sounds simple enough. i remember reading one site about a week ago on it (when I was looking for something else), didn't bookmark it (stoopid!) and now can't find it. given that 500 series batteries can cost up to US$150 each (and they take two for decent battery life) I'd be really interested in giving it a go. if anyone's got any first hand experience or idea, please tell. Cheers, Ben. === I have re-built one battery pack with new cells and reconfigured four others by replacing bad cells with the good ones from a fifth. I have been soldering things since the mid-'60s. I'm good at it. I found the complete re-celling job to be a challenge. Having said that, if you take on the project, make certain that the electronics and specifically the memory chip in the pack you are re-bulding are ok. Then follow the instructions at that site, only be even more careful about opening the pack. Don't stick anyting inside it to pry it open. When you have it completely separated all around, you are going to have to pull it apart with some force to break an internal joint. Digi-Key <http://www.digikey.com> has the cells. They are item #PO17T-ND, 10 for $47.53. You can use the two extra to replace individual bad cells in other packs. You will have to shorten some of the tabs and bend them around to fit but It can be done and will give you a "like new" battery for less than $50. =============================== Hardy, Hard's Disk Ltd., Freehold NY.
