That function is built into the 5300.  For what ever reason the 
PB1xxs didn't have any internal battery backup for the main memory 
during sleep.  This meant that when you pulled the battery (to change 
it) during sleep everything was dumped.  The trick of connecting a 9V 
battery provided enough power to keep the memory up while changing 
the battery.  Pretty much all the later models have a rechargeable 
PRAM battery that does the same thing.
