Both sides of the SCSI chain need to be terminated... 500 series PBs don't provide termination power, so you'll need terminators (or termination power switched on at each peripheral if they have it, ZIP drives usually do) at the end of the chain and between the first drive and the 540.
Naturally you'll need the Apple CD-ROM extension and Iomega drivers installed too.
