For the PB5xx, the cells are side-side; for the 5300, the cells are stacked. These batteries are rechargeable (as indicated by the "VL" prefix) and will usually work until the individual cell voltage is 2.4 volts or more. It is not uncommon for the individual cell voltages to be quite different (one at 2.4 volts, the other at 2.8 volts, e.g.) A total voltage of 4.8 volts probably indicates a usable battery.
