I just got my first laptop, a 5300c with 32 mg and running OS 8.5.1 -- except for needing a new battery it seemed perfect in every way. But then yesterday it crashed (I thought) definitively: the screen went black, and no key or key combination brought about any response whatsoever. It wasn't asleep (no blinking green light), nor was it truly off, since a gentle hum emanated from somewhere in its innards. I forced it to shut down by imitating a power failure (disconnecting the cord and ejecting the battery) (maybe not a very clever thing to have done) -- and then it restarted normally, though with the warning that having crashed the last time it was checking itself over. The message then appeared that the memory manager (I think this was the phrase) had found something wrong and I should take it to a service tech. No repeat of this information on subsequent restarts, and the computer seems to work as well as ever, but it now thinks it has only 24 mg installed (though still 64 virtual, which doesn't add up) instead of 32. What happened? Where did the extra 8mg go? What can I do about it? Many thanks, Victoria
