They can be networked via a crossofver cable (PC ethernet port - Mac
ethernet port) or via a hub or switch via normal ethernet cables. (PC
-hub-Mac)

Now, for networking, I assume you mean sharing files.

This presumes you're using an iMac running OSX.

The iMac can access the PC's shares via the GO > File Server menu itme,
and typing in smb://<PC name>/<share name> in the connect to dialog.

Getting the PC to see files on the iMac is more problematic. The free
solution is here:

http://www.opensource.apple.com/projects/documentation/howto/html/osxsmb.html

or

http://osx.macnn.com/features/installsamba.phtml which has links to a
graphical setup utility.

Then the PC will see shared files in Network Neighborhood.

For a Mac running OS 9 or lower, go get MacSOHO from Thursby Systems.
