You mention overcoming memory barriers...the
CF or flash cards won't do anything about this.
This is storage space, not RAM. The only way
they would help you in that area is if there is
some utility that would let you use them as
virtual memory instead of the Hard Drive...I don't
know if this exist or not, or if it could be done
through the memory control panel.

That being said,
personally I would go with the Compact Flash
cards for several reasons:

1. They are more durable, as the memory is not
exposed as it is on on the SmartMedia.

2. You can actually buy Compact Flash Hard
drives in large sizes if you ever wanted to do
that.

3. The controller circuitry is built in to the CF
cards, which (strictly opinion here) might give
you a little better performance on the older
computer than the smart media which is
basically just raw memory.

4. Again, another opinion here, but I think
eventually the CF format will become a more
universal format than the SmartMedia, because
of the reasons above, and therefore be more
readily available in the future, although I don't
think either of them is going to become
obselete anytime soon.

The only real advantage I can see of the
SmartMedia (although I have some of these and
they work just fine in my digital camera) is that it
is a little more compact and lighter. Quite
honestly though, you would have to be planning
on carrying a shoebox full of them for this to be
an important factor, in my choice.
