The list was so encouraging when I wrote ten days or so ago about the evaporating memory on my new laptop I want to let you that it all came out with what seems to be complete success!
>the computer now thinks it has only 24 >mg installed (though still 64 virtual, which doesn't add up) instead of 32. >What happened? Where did the extra 8mg go? What can I do about it? The consensus was that the RAM card was loose and needed to be reseated, especially after insertion of a new battery seemed to "fix" it. So with a certain amount of trepidation and with the (absolutely essential) assistance of the service manual I took it apart, reseated the card (which was so obviously out of place it's a wonder it worked at all: instead of being horizontal it sat at almost a 20 degree angle), put everything back together, and now it seems to be fine. The only truly trepidacious part was taking out the keyboard, especially since the manual was a little vague about what the connectors looked like; it wasn't till it was all reassembled and rebooted that I could feel completely certain that I'd "detached" the cables correctly instead of "ripping them out" catastrophically. Thank you all so much: not only is it pleasant to have the machine behaving the way it's supposed to, the whole experience was definitely empowering, and if necessary will be repeated with considerably more confidence.
