Ed Vaeth explained how the pram battery on my 280 duo is charged by the logic board over several hours. I picked up the rig at a swap meet and it hadn't been used for years, which might explain why the pram battery was discharged.
I think this clears the mystery and I thank Ed and the others for your input. I'll put the rig back together, run it in the dock for a day and see what happens.
