Hi all, I've been trying unsucessfully to get my PowerBook 3400c (OS 8.5) connected to the Internet via my existing Internet account.
What happens is this: With a Hayes Optima 288 PCMCIA modem inserted, I try accessing the Setup Assistant via the Apple Menu. This asks if I want to connect to the internet (Yes), do I want to use an existing account (Yes) and then propmtly quits. Digging around the Hard disk, I find a folder :Internet:Internet Utilities:Internet Setup: which contains the 'Internet Setup Assistant', the 'ISP Info Assistant' and the 'Internet Editor Assistant'. The latter of the three seems to be what I need so I select it and proceed to fill out all the salient details. At the last stage however, when you select "Finish" or "Go Ahead" or whatever it's called, the program bombed out with error #11. Now, if I try again, the Assistant will either bomb out just after the first screen when your name your connection (I always use my ISP's name - ihug) or at the end. The errors always seem to be type 1, 2, or 11. Next I tried using my generic Rockwell chipset 28.8 external serial modem from my PC. For some reason, the modem control panel doesn't seem to have a "Standard Modem" setting as does Windows so I told the Mac I was using a Hayes Accura 288. Trying the Internet Editor Assistant again, it finally managed to go through the process without hanging, yet I still can't connect to the Internet. I'm helpfully told that a problem has occured and would I like to retry... When I do try to connect nothing happens - not a peep from the modem etc. Soo... Does anyone have an idea what's going on? Reinstalling the Mac OS isn't possible right now as I don't have the CDs yet. I'm also sorry if I'm missing something obvious, but I'm only now starting to migrate away from the PC. BTW, FWIW, the generic external modem from the PC is known good - I'm using it to send this. The Optime PCMCIA modem and indeed the 3400's PCMCIA slots are an unknown quantity to me, though the modem does appear on the desktop when inserted.
