Several people responded with helpful explanations about how the screen
works,  and at  22:13:06 Jesse Lucke also said,

There's more to it than speed:  the battery time indicator on the control
strip switches to a higher figure when the display goes black and white
--maybe by 15 minutes or so.  And then (this really is subjective), the time
remaining seems to run out more slowly.  "Just typing" is what I do 99 per
cent of the time so b & w is OK, but I'm still wondering if the difference
is worth bothering about.
