I have been having the same problem with my Orinoco Silver and 1400c 166/9.1.
It's been a while since I tried it, but one of the things I kept running across was that the Orinoco needs a firmware upgrade. I forget right now who told me or where I read it, but the upgrade could not be done on a Mac. One had to find someone with a PC and upgrade the firmware on it and then it would work with the updated drivers on the 1400. I didn't have time to follow up on this at the time, but hope to get back to it this fall. In the meantime I will be watching this list to see if someone understands this problem better than I do.
