8.1 was the first MacOS with appearancelib. (Well, 8.0 was, but I digress...) In fact, it was the separate Appearance Extension in 8.1 that gave it its look. It was integrated into 8.5 and above. Although if you try to remove it from 8.0/8.1 you'll end up with an unbootable system. There were some additions to 8.5+, however, such as the fancier CPL. Unfortunately, with the whole thing being integrated into the OS, there's no good way to separate it and put it into 8.1 or earlier.
