Hey! I take exception to that! _I'm_ not violating any FCC regulations... ;-) Actually, it's pretty tough to violate those regs w/ normal unamplified 802.11b equipment. There are two limitting factors - total power radiated, and power density. Unless you have a pretty crazy antenna (say 25+ dB directed gain), you won't violate the second, and the first is impossible to violate without sticking an amplifier on your equipment. For the record, my Pringles can pulls between 8 and 18 dB (never did get a good reading on that - did some pretty informal measurements, but they varied a lot... Probably because my antenna is pretty shoddy ;-) Built this thing as a pretty cheesy physics project at the U in the spring, who knew I'd ever actually use it - right now I'm sharing bandwidth w/ a fellow hooked up to a cable modem some .5 miles away or so. Works like a charm! Yeah. Well, that was just FYI I guess. Like you were saying, though, the wireless internet access jamie mentioned may use microwaves, but I'm pretty sure it's not 2.4GHz, and it certainly isn't the same protocol as 802.11b.
