James, Well, I should be pretty clear that I'm not a powerbook expert (yet ;-))...
But the way I understand how passive displays work, this shimmer is caused by the display trying to draw pixels in colors which are not native to it. Your display may support 256 colors, but that doesn't mean that every color in your 256 color palette can be reliably drawn on the display. To make up for the different shades, color depths, and luminosities, the display switches pixels in the effected area on and off rapidly - thus producing the shimmer. You can't avoid it, AFAIK. But you might be able to minimize the effect by adjusting your contrast and brightness settings, calibrating the display in the Monitors & Sound control panel (not sure how far back that feature goes, but it should be in 7.6+), and trying to limit your color palette to the "system palette". Oh, and don't try to do too much with vibrant colors... pick "bland" pictures for your desktop picture, for instance... I don't know if that will help you or not, but it did help on my 5300cs and my Duo 230 (the greyscale shimmers sometimes too). Any way I can reproduce this cool "shimmer" effect?
