Success!!!!!

Well, partial success at least. I got a little bored this afternoon
and decided to play around w/ my CS motherboard... I pulled out my
trusty 15W soldering iron, some tweezers, and a toothpick and
succeeded in upclocking my 100MHz 603e based 5300cs to 116.7MHz !!!

It's not much of a speed boost, but for everyone who wishes they had
the extra 17MHz, I finally figured out how to do it!

For the record, this is what I did:

-I moved resistor R48 to position R46.
I tried booting at this point and succeeded in getting some garbled
chimes, but no boot.
-I moved resistor R43 to R127
I tried booting at this point (w/ extensions disabled*) and got to
the desktop.

I'm running Newer Tech's Gauge Pro's memory tests right now with no
crashing...

If you want some details on how to change your CPU multiplier from 3x
to 3.5x, go to my website
: <http://homepage.mac.com/alk/projects/5300/5300oc.html>
The site hasn't been updated w/ my success yet, but the info is
correct.

However, if you are looking for the best speed boost, I'd still go for
changing your bus speed to 36 or 38MHz - a faster bus means a faster
CPU _AND_ faster memory throughput - a big bottleneck on this machine.

Next project: install 512K of extra VRAM on the standard 100MHz mobo
to "create" a CE motherboard! (Yeah, I probably won't do this, but
it's nice to think about...)

I'll write back later when i've run a few tests to see if it's stable.
Anyone have a copy of MacBench? I can't find it anywhere on the
web... :-(

Peace out!
(an excited) Drew

* Unfortunately, the machine is not useable when booting w/ extensions
enabled - because it only has 512K of VRAM, the display gets all
"messed up" (it's a CE display - 800x600 - requiring 1MB of VRAM). If
someone wants to try this mod on their 5300cs or 'c, let me know how
it works! I'm betting that there will be no problem, so long as you
have the proper amount of VRAM for your particular display type.
