That's not _entirely_ accurate. There is NO _monolithic_ Linux distro
that is NuBus enabled out-of-box. MkLinux, OTOH, is so-called
micro-kernel Linux, and is NuBus enabled. MkLinux has been made to
run on the 1400, so that's probably your best bet.

However, there _is_ a NuBus enabled linux KERNEL that you can use to
run any PPC Linux distro (LinuxPPC, Mandrake, Suse, Yellow Dog, etc).

I recently asked the same question (how to get Linux on my 5300) but
got very few answers - with due respect to this VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE
community, it is mostly Macintosh OS oriented (yeah, go figure, it
_IS_ a PowerBooks list!! ;-)

So I did a little research on my own. It's possible to get a Linux
distro working, but it's not quite as easy as it is on the New World
PowerMacs, and nowhere near as easy as it is on a PC. So with that
caveat, some good places to start your own research are here:
<http://nubus-pmac.sourceforge.net/>
<http://www.infernosoft.com/beowoof/installingLinux.html>
<http://www.mklinux.org/>
<http://nubus.tuxppc.org/>
And especially:

rd=77>

As always, make sure you get everything between the <> brackets or the
URLs may not work.

I'm _very_ interested in this, so let keep me posted on your progess,
ok?

Some things you should be aware of, though, about what Linux on NuBus
PowerBooks doesn't support:
-PowerBook audio doesn't work (curiously, the AWACs controller for
PowerMacs works, but the ITT ASCO 2300 IC - same codec, different chip
- in PowerBooks _doesn't_!)
-Floppy controller doesn't work
-PCMCIA controller (TREX custom Apple ASIC) doesn't work
-PowerBook Media Bay (again, probably because this is controlled by a
custom Apple ASIC with little documentation for alternative OS
developers - go figure. Anyone remember BeOS and the G3?)

I don't know if these things will work under MkLinux, though. MkLinux
was originally an Apple project, so there _is_ more odd-ball Apple
hardware support in MkLinux.

Peace,
Drew
