What's the error? Was the ethernet driver loaded at startup?

You also might try just turning appletalk off, or even disabling the
extensions. I have an icon in my control strip to enable/disable
appletalk, but there's also a switch in the chooser.

Indeed, good advice. Just turn AppleTalk off completely. It hardly
sounds like you are using it (if you are plugging the printer into
the printer/modem port and get an error when switching to ethernet -
more on that later).

You can't use AppleTalk through the printer/modem port at the same
time as you are trying to print to a _non-AppleTalk_ printer. The
StyleWriter II is not a network printer (unlike the LaserWriter II)
and does not work w/ AppleTalk directly.

That error when switching to ethernet occurs because ethernet requires
a physical network to be in place... It tries to detect the next
device (usually a hub or switch, but can be another computer
depending...) and if it doesn't find anything on the port, then it
concludes you aren't connected to a network and won't let you turn it
on.

So if you aren't connected to an Ethernet network, and you aren't
using LocalTalk if you are using the printer/modem port to plug in a
printer, then you don't need AppleTalk. Just turn it off. Or set it
to "Remote Only" if you need it active for some strange reason, but
don't want it using a physical port on your computer... You can turn
off AppleTalk in the Chooser, Control Strip, or AppleTalk control
panel.

Peace,
Drew
