The thing that has the double-headed arrow icon is the AAUI ethernet 
port. What you need is an AAUI to 10-base-T tranceiver; about $30 new or 
available for a lot less elsewhere...try the LEM swap list.

The ethernet is built into the motherboard, no card needed.

Plug in the tranceiver, plug in the cable and you're good to go, so long 
as the ethernet extensions are installed.

The 540 was one of the first laptops of any sort to be network ready 
out-of-the-box.
