I've never had any problems with either of my 1400s, one of which is identical to yours, while using NS 4.79. I haven't tried NS 6 in the 1400, but it works fine in my G3 upgraded PCI Macs.
IE 5 crashes occasionally in those same PCI Macs and so I haven't tried it in the 1400s.
